Bumthang Trek

Trip Introduction

Bumthang is one of the most spectacular valleys in Bhutan and also the heartland of Buddhism. The Guru and his lineage of Tertons (treasure finders), have led to the sprouting of many temples in the valley and offer scenic hiking and trekking with blend of beautiful nature and human settlement.
Among all Bumthang culture treks offer you great opportunity to interact with locals and richness of Bhutanese nature. This trek can be graded as one of easiest trek and it is best for the beginners. The trek crosses several villages and passing over Phephela 3353m. In this trek we will make your night halt in the farmer’s house or in tent as far your request. The trek starts from Thangbi temple and ends at Tang village.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Kathmandu Arrival (1360m)

You will be warmly greeted by well Nepal at your arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport Kathmandu. Our representative will picked up you and about a 45 minute bus journey to the heart of the city and check in to Hotel there is time for a cup of tea, shower and then a chance to see the tourist district of Kathmandu by night as we go for dinner before an early night!

 

Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing (1360m)

This is your Kathmandu sightseeing day and preparation day too. You will visit Kathmandu Durbar square, a in-creatable wooden house, palace and temple,(a world heritage site) and Swayambhunath (a world heritage site) which a Buddhist stupa and Monastery,  which over 2000 years old and one of the oldest in the world. Here is a great chance to see across the valleys, see some monkey and begin to learn about this fascinating country. If you need anything before heading out then you have to shopping on this day. Here is short briefing about trip in given and pre tour discussion is done with your leader and members. Feel free to ask any questions regarding your tour.

 

Day 03: Kathmandu to Paro

The flight into Paro (2280m/7524ft) you will have explores spectacular flight over the Himalaya of Nepal. In the clear weather, magnificent views of the world’s highest peaks give way to the verdant greens of Paro valley. The first gift from Bhutan is the cool, clean fresh air as we step out of the plane. After clearing customs and visa control you are receive by Norden Adventure representative and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure with a walk through the main streets of Paro. Dinner and overnight: Hotel in Paro.

 

Day 04: Paro - Thimphu 2Hrs drive

Right after your breakfast drive to Thimphu with cascading landscape of Paro valley along Paachu around 20 km you will reach to Chhuzom (Confluence of River) where you can see sytle of stupa. From Chhuzom swtich to Thimphu along Wangchu (River from Thimphu) around 31km and 1hrs drive. Once you reach to Thimphu visit Painting school, National Library, Simple Bhutan. 
Lunch at Local restaurant. After lunch, visit Motithang Zoo, Hike to Wangdisthe to enjoy the whole valley of Thimphu town. Before Tashi Choedzong visit, if there is enough time Hand craft Baazar and stroll around the town. After 5:00 visit Tashi Choedzong if it is summer and after 4:00pm in winter. Dinner and overnight hotel in Thimphu. 

 

Day 05: Thimphu – Trongsa 5-6hrs

After early breakfast drive to Trongsa. The drive will take about 5-6hours. It is day you are driving along with different evegtation with beautiful landscape of Bhutan by crossing two famous pass (Dochula pass-3150m, Pelela pass-3420) and district of Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang. Each pass is marked with stupas and flags. Stop for while to stretch your leg and body. 
Lunch on the way. Once you reach to Trongsa visit Trongsa dzong and museum. Check with timing the dzong will open till at 5:00pm and for Museum you should reach before 3:30pm in winter;4:30 in summer. Dinner and overnight in Hotel Trongsa.


Day 06: Trongsa to Bumthang 68km2hrs
After breakfast dive to Bumthang pssing over Yotong pass 3420m. Stop for while after hour drive to take clean, fresh air and to stretch your body. After 12km drive, you will entre first village of Bumthang with beautiful landscape.
Lunch in Town or in Hotel. After lunch visit to Jampay Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang, Jakar Dzong, Tamshing Lhakhang, Konchosum Lhakhang and Bumthang town.Bumthang is comprised of four valleys, the deeply spiritual region of Bumthang is shrouded in the religious legend. You can also complete some sightseeing before lunch if you reach early in Bumthang. Dinner and overnight in Hotel in Bumthang


Day 07: Bumthang to Nganglhakhang (Start of the trek)
After breakfast drive to Tangbi Lhakhang to start your trek. Today is very short trek. en-route visit Tangbi Temple and Nganlhakhang and visit local farm house to experience life style of high altitude. Dinner and overnight stay at farmer’s house or tent as per your request.
Altitude: 2800m, Distance: 14km, Time: 3hrs.


Day 08:  Nganglhakhang to Ugyenchholing

Today is quite long trek. start quite early to reach at particular camp or farm house. The trek start with gradual ascend till Phephe la with altitude of 3353m the highest point of trek with overwhelm nature passing through pine forest. Once you reach to Phephe la descend in Tang valley. Dinner and overnight stay at farmer’s house or tent as per your request.
Altitude: 2800m, Distance: 20km, Time: 6-7hrs.

 

Day 09: Ugyencholing – Jakar/Bumthang 50km2hrs30 minute

After breakfast visit Tang Ugyencholing private museum which displays antique thing of Bhutan. You are also allow to take picture. Visit school and Membertsho (Burning lake). Dinner and overnight in Hotel in Bumthang.

Day 10: Bumthangto Punakha 209 km6-7hrs
After Early breakfast to Punakha along same way till to Mesina. On reaching visit Punakha Dzong and scroll around the small town of Punakha. Dinner and overnight stay in Hotel Punakha.

 

Day 11: Punakha to Paro 140km 5hrs

Drive to Paro via Thimphu passing over Dochula pass. If weather is clear, stop for while to take photo of candy mountain of Himalaya.
Drive to Paro. En route visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest dzong built by Zhabdrung Rinpoche. Proceed to Paro, on reaching visit Rimpong dzong and Tag Dzong (National Museum of Bhutan. Dinner and overnight in Hotel in Paro.

 

Day 12: Paro Excursion to Tiger nest.

Today is hike to Takshang Monastry. Request your guide to start early in morning. To reach at cafeteria before, so that you will not suffer in sun heat. Depending on your hike, Lunch will order by guide either at cafeteria or in Town. After lunch visit ruin Drukgyel dzong and in evening stroll around the town to do last shop in Bhutan.

 

Day13: Depature from Paro Aiport to Kathmandu.In the morning Norden Adventure escort will bid you farewell at Paro airport. Good-bye and happy journey back Kathmandu and Our staff will be at airport to receive you.

 

Day 14: Sightseeing in Kathmandu

 Today is your free day at Kathmandu  you are free to enjoy any of the services and facilities at Kathmandu  like sports, Game, shoppings, restaurant and bars and get your beloved and close one a memory  of Nepal. You will be organized a great Nepali Dinner program with your crew memember and them. Enjoy

 

Day 15: Depature HomeYour Bumthang,Trek Via Nepal come to an end today! There is nothing to do than trade emails to travel friends and agencies, also organize your photos, On our way to home  we will have plently of time  to plan our next adventure trip in the wanderful country of Nepal.

We understand that after a hard day trekking the need for some comfort is very important. At Top of the World Treks we only use the best possible accommodation and also food.  We allow our customers to chose from the menu and eat what they would like and this is included in the cost of the trip. We choose places with the best hygiene possible. 

If your trip includes camping we will take a train chef and kitchen staff to ensure the food is also to the highest standard although choices from a menu will not be available.

    Equipment Check – List

     

    What clothing and equipment to take is one of the things that people worry the most about!  We can advise you and help you and it does of course depend on the time of year, the area, the altitude and how many days you are trekking/climbing. When you arrive in Kathmandu we will go through all your equipment to ensure that it is correct for your trip. In Thamel (the tourist area of Kathmandu where you will be staying) there is an abundance of shops seeling equipment and clothing so if anything is forgotten it can easily be sourced.It is also possible to hire climbing equipment and also items such as down jackets, and sleeping bags saving you a large purchase.

     

    The following equipment list is suggested and necessary for both camping and tea house  treks. Use this list as a guide line.The basic check list should help you with your packing for any of our trips. Please remember that you  should always try to keep the weight of your clothing equipment down to a minimum. Your packed trek bag,  should weight no more than 15kg. Please remember this is just a check list and you do not necessarily need to bring everything that is listed bellow. 

     

    GENERAL CHECK - LIST

    The following  basic check list should help you with your packing for any of our trips. Please remember that you  should  always try to keep the weight of your clothing equipment down to a minimum. Your packed trek bag,  should weight no more than 15 kilograms. Please remember this is just a check list and you do not necessarily need to bring everything that is listed bellow. Use your own experience and judgment  to make your decision.

    -Light and expedition weight thermal tops.

    -Fleece jacket or pullover.

    -fleece wind –stopper Jacket (optional)

    -Waterproof  sheel jacket (preferably breathable fabric)

    -Lightweight thermal gloves.

    -Underwear (4)

    -Shorts (2)

    -Lightweight cotton long trousers / pants .

    -Light and expedition  weight thermal bottoms.

    -Sun hat or Scarf.

    -Warm fleece hat or light balaclava.

    -T- shirt (2)

    -Thin, light weight (inner socks) (4).

    -Sunglasses with UV protection.

    -Sleeping bag rated to 0 degrees ¾ season

    -Head lamp (eg petzl) Spare bulbs and batteries.

    -Small padlock  to lock trek bag.

    -Basic first aid kit(see First aid medicine bellow)

    -Plastic bags –for keeping items dry inside trek bag.

    -Daypack ( 35 to 40 litters/ 2500 to 3000 cubic inches.)

    -Camping mattress, eg thermarest pad.

    -water bottles.

    -Tolietries.

    -Small wash towel.

    -Footwear appropraite to the trip.

    -Waterproof  shell trousers / pants. (Preferably  berathable fabric)

     

    TREKKING  CHECK LIST

    In addition to the items listed in our general check list you will need to take the following on your trekking trip:

    -Heavyweight gloves or mittens with a waterproof sheel  outer.

    -Down vest and/ or jacket (optional).

    -Fleece or wool trousers/ pants.

    -Trekking/ hiking boods with spare laces.

    -Thick, warm wool hiking socks (4)

    - Footwear for around camp, eg running shoes and /or sandals.

    -Gaiters (optional).

    -Telescopic trekking/ ski poles (optional)

     

    MOUNTAINERING / CLIMBING CHECK LIST

    In addition to the checklists for general trekking equipment above, and depending  on the trip you have chosen, various items of mountaineering equipment may also be required, eg:

    -Plastic boots and crampons (preferably step – in bindings ) with front points.

    -Mountaineering  Safety harness.

    -Mountaineering  Ice axe(60 to 75 cms long – depending on your height and personal  preference).

    -120 cms (4ft) climbing sling and to locking and unlocking  caravines.

    -Telescopic ski – sticks (optional).

    -Prussik loops .

    -Climbing helmet (optional).

    -Jumer (Ascender & Descender).

    -Pocket Knife.

    -Head lamp.

    -Mattress.

    -Rope and Snow bars.

    -Ice crew.

    -High altimeter.

    Most if not all of this equipment will be needed  for any  trip that  crosses steep, snow – covered  ground, or which includes sections  of glacier travel. Our recommendation that you take no more than fifteen kilos of trekking equipment dose not include your plastic boots, ice axe , Crampons ot herness/ carabiners . During the trek, climbing hard wear will be carried separately from your personal trek bag, in group bags untill needed.

     

    EQUIPMENT  RENTAL

    In order to minimize your expense outlay for trekking and climbing equipment you may never use  again, equipmeent rental and buying is possible in Kathmandu. You find them lot cheaper  than you find in europe and in Usa. Shops in Thamel offer a wide range of equipment available for rent and buy. Here is some cost which give you an aidea of the cost to rent in Kathmandu.

    -Sleeping bags.

    -Down Jackets.

    -All purpose mountaineering Ice axe (60 – 70 cms)

    -Ice hummer.

    -Climbing Harness .

    -2 looking Carabiners , Climbing Sling.

    -12 – point Crampons.

    -Plastic Climbing boots.

    -Helmet.

     

    FIRST AID MEDICINE

    -Bandage for Sprains.

    -Plaster/ Band- aids.

    -Iodine or Water filter(optional)

    -Moleskin/ Second skin – for blisters.

    -Antiseptic ointment for cuts.

    -Anti- bacterial throat lozenges (with antiseptic)

    -Aspirin/ paractamol- general painkiller.

    -Oral rehydration salts.

    -Broad – spectrum antibiotic (norfloxacin or ciprofloxin).

    -Anti  - diarrhea medication (antibiotic).

    -Diarrhea stopper (Imodium – optional)

    -Antibiotic for Giardia or similar microbe or bacteria.

    -Diamox  (Altitude sickness – can be  bought in Kathmandu.

    -Sterile Syringe set (anti-AIDS precaution).
